Anonymous ftp is a form of file transfer protocol offering public access to selected directories and files. The term is derived from the use of the term "anonymous" as a common username for all clients. Anonymous ftp sites constitute public archives on the Internet.
At the initial name prompt, simply type: anonymous. Enter your e-mail address, or any other identification, as a password. No account is necessary.
Public access files are often in subdirectories under the directory heading /pub. Access for anonymous users is usually limited to a certain number of callers at any one time.
Anonymous ftp is used by government agencies, educational institutions, and a wide variety of organizations, associations and businesses to offer files-- whether programs, text, sound or graphics--to the public. Shareware programs are commonly accessed from anonymous ftp sites.
